Part I

Focusing Questions

  • When are we?
  • What is our relationship with the Earth?
  • What is our pedagogy?

Summary

Primarily informed by earth science, cultural histories, and histories of education, I outline the key contours of our current geological epoch, the Holocene. I then describe and characterize key relationships human societies have forged with the Earth during the Holocene Epoch. Finally, I overlay the history of schools/schooling onto our epoch.

"It's not the role of a grandfather or a philosopher to herald the end of the world. It will be tough for [the next] twenty years, but I think that in the twenty years after that we'll have found a way to resume the civilizing process that was interrupted in the period we're in now."

- Bruno Latour (2023)
