“Education in the Holocene”

Guiding Questions

  • Act I – How do teachers teach?
  • Act II – When do teachers teach?

Summary

To consider the question of how teachers teach, I present and describe a highly original framework developed by Brent Davis in his 2004 book, Inventions of Teaching: A Genealogy. To consider the question of when teachers teach, I then situate Davis’ fractal-like teaching framework within the context of our current geological epoch, the Holocene, and make the case that Davis’ framework helps us see more clearly uniquely-tuned Holocentric inventions of teaching.

"It's not the role of a grandfather or a philosopher to herald the end of the world. It will be tough for [the next] twenty years, but I think that in the twenty years after that we'll have found a way to resume the civilizing process that was interrupted in the period we're in now."

- Bruno Latour (2023)
